DIN VDE 0100-702: Electrical installations for swimming pools
The DIN VDE 0100-702 standard deals with the installation of electrical systems in areas around swimming pools and paddling pools, as well as fountains and other water basins and their surrounding areas. You can find out which protective measures the standard requires here
Scope of application of the standard
DIN VDE 0100-702 is entitled ‘Installation of low-voltage systems – Part 7-702: Requirements for special types of premises, rooms and systems – Swimming pools, walk-in water basins and fountains’. The standard specifies requirements for the electrical safety of electrical installations in
swimming pools and paddling pools and their surrounding areas,
areas in natural bodies of water and similar areas that are accessed by people for swimming or similar activities,
fountains with or without pools and their surrounding areas.
It does not apply to the use of portable equipment.
Division of swimming pools into zones
Walk-in pools and swimming pools are divided into three zones in DIN VDE 0100-702, similar to bathing and shower rooms. The figure shows the division of swimming pools into zones 0, 1 and 2.

This is how swimming pool areas are divided (from: WEKA Media, training templates for electrical engineering).
Area 0 represents the interior of the pool.
Area 1 borders horizontally on area 0 and ends at a vertical surface 2 m from the inner edge of the pool and 2.5 m above floor level.
Zone 2 borders directly on zone 1 and ends after a further 1.5 m.
Protective measures against dangerous body currents
Protection by means of low voltage using PELV is prohibited. As a general rule, only protection by means of low voltage using SELV may be used in all zones.
Regardless of the nominal voltage, it must be ensured that covers or enclosures are designed to at least protection class IP2X or IPXXB in accordance with DIN EN 60529 (VDE 0470-1) – or they must have insulation that can withstand a test voltage of AC 500 V for at least one minute.
Further protection through additional equipotential bonding
All external conductive parts must be connected via a protective equipotential bonding conductor in areas 0, 1 and 2 in accordance with DIN VDE 0100-702. At the same time, they must be connected to the protective conductor of the bodies of all electrical equipment located in these areas.
Similarly, all metal covers and metal cable sheaths must be included in the protective equipotential bonding.
Selection and installation of electrical equipment
To protect people from potential hazards during use, DIN VDE 0100-702 specifies minimum IP protection classes that electrical equipment in areas 0, 1 and 2 must have.
DIN VDE 0100-702 for cable and wiring systems
In all areas covered by this standard, it is prohibited to lay busbar trunking systems in accordance with DIN VDE 0250-201.
In areas 0, 1 and 2, cables and wires with metal sheathing must not be laid under any circumstances. Metal sheaths that cannot be touched must be included in the protective equipotential bonding.
In areas 0 and 1, only cables that are used to supply electrical equipment in these areas may be laid.
All cables and lines of other circuits must, according to DIN VDE 0100-702:
be embedded at least 6 cm deep or be protected by a residual current device (RCD) with a rated differential current not exceeding 30 mA or be protected by protective separation in accordance with DIN VDE 0100-410.
Only cables and wires of type H07RN8-F or equivalent may be used in area 0.
In general, all cables and wires should be laid in electrical installation conduits. Only electrical installation conduits that comply with impact resistance class 5 according to DIN EN 61386-1 (VDE 0605-1) may be used.
Branch and junction boxes must not be installed in zone 0 under any circumstances. In zone 1, they are only permitted for circuits protected by extra-low voltage using SELV.
Switching and control devices in accordance with DIN VDE 0100-702
Switching and control devices as well as sockets must not be installed in zone 0 under any circumstances. In zone 1, only approved electrical equipment may be installed if the power source is located in zone 2 and is operated with the protective measures prescribed there.
In pools with a small surrounding area, switching devices, control devices and sockets may also be installed in zone 1 if they are installed outside the reach (1.25 m) of the boundary to zone 0 and at least 0.3 m above the floor. However, the following requirements must be met:
Protection by low voltage using SELV with a rated voltage not exceeding AC 25 V or DC 60 V, whereby the power source must be installed outside zones 0 and 1, or
by automatic disconnection of the power supply by a residual current device (RCD) with a rated residual current not exceeding 30 mA, or
Protection by protective separation, whereby the power source is installed outside areas 0 and 1 and only supplies one consumer.
DIN VDE 0100-702 and other electrical equipment
Special requirements apply to permanently installed equipment, e.g. pumps, filter systems, counter-current systems or permanently installed electrical swimming pool cleaning systems. However, protection by means of extra-low voltage (SELV) with maximum voltages of 12 V AC and 30 V DC applies here.
Lights used in areas 0 and 1 must comply with DIN EN 60598-2-18 (VDE 0711-218). All electrical equipment in this area must be inaccessible and may only be opened with tools.
